Sports play a vital role in the school experience, offering students a wealth of benefits that extend beyond the field. Engaging in sports helps develop crucial life skills such as discipline, leadership, teamwork, and resilience. At Ashoka College, we are committed to fostering an environment where students can explore their athletic potential, cultivate their talents, and build a lifelong appreciation for physical activity. Alongside the mandatory physical education program, students are provided with various opportunities to engage in organized sports and games. Currently, the school offers the following sports:

KARATE

Karate plays a vital role in a student’s overall development, supporting both physical strength and personal growth in many meaningful ways.

  • It also instils confidence and self-esteem, helping students believe in their abilities both inside and outside the training environment. With guidance on proper technique, safety and well-planned nutrition, students are supported in maintaining overall well-being and long-term health.
  • Discipline and Focus – Karate teaches self-control, respect and concentration, helping students to improve their academic performance and daily behaviour.
  • Self-Defence Skills – Students learn safe and responsible techniques to protect themselves, building awareness and personal safety.
  • Confidence Building – As students progress through belt levels, they gain confidence in their abilities and develop a positive self-image.
  • Physical Fitness – Karate enhances strength, flexibility, coordination, endurance and overall physical health.

GYMNASTICS

The students who enroll in the after-school gymnastics programme take part in an exciting series of practical training sessions. They practice together with their teachers and two dedicated coaches, who guide them throughout the activities.

During the practice, the students have the opportunity to practice a variety of new skills and techniques, helping them to improve their balance, flexibility, and overall confidence in gymnastics. The well-trained coaches provide step-by-step guidance, ensuring that every student learns safely and effectively.

BADMINTON

Badminton is a fun indoor sport played with a racket and a shuttlecock. Players hit the shuttlecock over a net, trying to make it land on the opponent’s side. It can be played as singles (one vs one) or doubles (two vs two). The game needs speed, focus, and good coordination.

Playing badminton helps children become physically active and healthy. It improves hand-eye coordination, balance, and quick thinking skills. Children also learn teamwork, discipline, and confidence while enjoying the game.

WUSHU

Wushu is a modern martial art and combat sport that originated in China. It combines physical fitness, self-defense techniques, discipline, and artistic movements. Wushu includes two main categories: Taolu (forms and routines) and Sanda (combat fighting).

Wushu is becoming popular as a sport that helps students develop strength, flexibility, concentration, confidence, and good character. It also encourages teamwork, respect, and a healthy lifestyle among children and youth. Wushu competitions are organized at school, national, and international levels, giving students opportunities to showcase their talents and represent Sri Lanka.

The importance of Wushu sports for children:

  • Improves physical fitness – Builds strength, flexibility, balance, and coordination.
  • Enhances discipline – Children learn self-control, respect, and focus.
  • Teaches self-defense – Provides basic skills to protect themselves safely.
